May 13, 2008
Kim Sutton is returning to Smoky Hill this June for two exciting days of mathematics instruction. Kim is known for her energetic, interactive workshops full of practical ideas, activities, and strategies.
On June 16, Kim will present Putting Meaning and Motivation into Teaching Mathematical Content Using Differentiated Instruction for K-5 in Salina at the Smoky Hill Learning Center. This new one day workshop will give practical strategies for teaching the mathematical content of grades K-5. Kim will share her motivating style of teaching using songs, stories, rich experiences with math content, and the latest children’s literature. Teachers will get the most recent research behind what is taught, how it is taught, and how children learn mathematics.
The outcomes of this workshop include
New strategies for achieving the goals of the math standards for all students
How to motivate even the most reluctant mathematician in your classroom
How to create “big” mathematical themes for differentiated instruction
How to build a strong algebraic foundation to mathematical content
How to create math tools for differentiation
On June 17, Kim will present Smart Math Strategies for Application of Intensive Math Content at the Sternberg Museum in Hays. Ms. Sutton will share how to create “smart” math strategies by looking at how to layer activities that start basic and end up with profound experiences with students. Come prepared to have “tons” of ready to go games and activities that inspire students.
The outcomes of this workshop include
What are the “smart” strategies in mathematics
How to cover more and increase the achievement in your classroom
How to create smart math visuals that build depth of content
How to make powerful connections “Now and Later”
How to organize the learning of math content
Participants are asked to bring scissors, a stapler, tape (scotch), marking pens, and a hole punch. You may also like to bring a camera to take pictures of the many activities that are displayed and shared.
Kim is a former elementary school teacher who is known for her enthusiasm and knowledge. Her “hands-on” style and real world experience are the cornerstones of her success! Kim is the author of numerous books on math, has a Masters Degree in Mathematics Education, is the former Assistant Director of Project AIMS, and has been a finalist for the Presidential Award as “Math Teacher of the Year”.
Participants will be able to enroll for one hour of graduate credit from Friends University. There are two options available for credit: (A). attending both days of Kim’s workshop or (B) attending Kim’s June 16th workshop in Salina and the Make It and Take It workshop June 17 in Salina. Graduate Credit Enrollment for either option A or B will be June 16 in Salina.
Don’t miss this opportunity to energize and strengthen your math instruction!
