December 01, 2009
On December 30, 2008, Li Xin arrived in the United States. Hily, as she is known using her English name, was hired by Smoky Hill to teach Mandarin Chinese language classes.
Hily is from Wuhan, China a city of ten million people, and she has a master's degree from Huazhong Normal University which is located in her hometown.
Hily recently finished teaching a Mandarin class for adults in the Salina community, and she will offer another session beginning in January, 2010. Classes for high school and middle school students are also available. Hily has also developed enrichment classes on Chinese language, culture, geography, and history for elementary school, middle school, and high school students available as single sessions or as a three session series.
Classes will be delivered using the distance learning equipment at Smoky Hill's learning and technology center located at 830 South Ninth Street in Salina.
If you have any questions or need more information about upcoming classes, contact Chris Moddelmog at 785-825-9185.
Mandarin Chinese is one of the languages classified as a "strategic" language by the Bush administration in 2006, and an opportunity for Kansans to learn more about the Chinese culture and language will be a tremendous benefit regardless of the career path they choose.
According to the Center for Applied Linguistics, as many as 17% fewer schools are teaching foreign languages than a decade ago. Mandarin classes available through Smoky Hill allow students to benefit from learning another language while removing some of the burden of securing an instructor from schools.
