Record Crowd Attends SHESC Legislative Lunch

December 16, 2009

A record crowd of more than 125 people attended SHESC's annual legislative lunch on December 11, 2009 to hear eight of Kansas' elected officials discuss educational issues.  In a change in format from recent years, legislators and state school board members also heard presentations from Smoky Hill member districts.  Administrators, teachers, school board members, and patrons from USD 272 Waconda and USD 306 Southeast of Saline, explained how the budget cuts implemented by the state government in the last year have affected their districts.

Participants included Don Svaty, Eber Phelps, Tom Moxley, Clay Aurand, Dan Johnson, Deena Horst, and Vern Swanson from the Kansas House of Representatives; and Kathy Martin from the Kansas State Board of Education.  Steve Howe from U.S. Representative Jerry Moran's office attended as well.  No Kansas state senators attended.  

Following the school district presentations, each elected state official provided information on questions that were compiled during various meetings of school administrators throughout the fall semester.  Members of the audience also had the opportunity to ask the panel to address other questions as well.
