Answer: SHESC Flight and Aviation Kits for Grades 3-8!
June 28, 2010
Developed by a team of area teachers and SHESC science consultant Rachel Loersch, each SHESC Flight and Aviation Kit has a notebook of lesson plans and the materials needed to complete the activities. From straws to stopwatches, from Newton’s cradle to a trundle wheel, every one of the ten kits is ready to engage your students for 3 to 5 days in discovering science concepts and using inquiry to test variables. Besides lesson plans, each notebook contains background information, recording and observation sheets, clear links to Kansas Science Standards, and suggestions for integration with other subjects.
Comments from the pilot project included: “Awesome kit. I really liked how the kit was set up; very simple and easy to use. I will definitely use it next year again. Do you have others?” “Students loved the bubble activity.”
Rachel Loersch is leading a workshop in Hays on June 17, where teachers of grades 3-8 will have the opportunity to work through the kit activities. Rachel is also offering a two day workshop in Salina on July 21st and July 28th. Participants will enjoy the kit activities and tour some of Salina’s aviation facilities like K-State Salina and Salina Airport Authority, control tower, and fire department.
