The Future in Reading Begins with myON Reader

Join SHESC and Capstone Digital to learn more about the future in reading.

Capstone Digital and Smoky Hill ESC are hosting three, free, hands-on workshops to introduce “myON reader”, a unique narrative reading program designed to personalize literacy for each student by matching student interests, their reading levels, and providing a recommended book list from a growing collection of enhanced digital books.  A complimentary lunch will also be provided.  The dates, times, and SHESC locations are:

Tuesday, September 27           9:00 am -  12:00 pm    Concordia (219 W. 7th)

Wednesday, September 28     9:00 am – 12:00 pm    Hays (1401 B Main St.)

Thursday, September 29         9:00 am – 12:00 pm    Salina (605 E. Crawford)

Who should attend? Anyone who makes decisions on the literacy development for their districts--Superintendents, Asst. Superintendents, Title l Leaders, SPED Leaders, ELL Coordinators, Literacy Coaches, etc.

“myON reader” reader includes embedded assessments to provide educators the ability to track, measure, and forecast students’ comprehension and reading growth.

Five KEY Features of “myON reader”

1.  Personalizes reading by recommending books based on student interest and reading ability

  • “myON reader”creates a recommended reading list automatically within myON reader after students complete the Interest Inventory and the initial Lexile® Placement Test, every student has access to books they find interesting that are at the appropriate reading level.
  • “myON reader”  recommendation engine continuously updates the recommended list based on individual student preferences.  Also, as students complete an embedded Lexile® benchmark after reading every five books, the system measures and predicts reading growth and recommends books at the appropriate level even as students grow.

2.  Monitors, measures, and predicts reading growth for every child
Through our partnership with  MetaMetrics, we have embedded the  Lexile® Framework for Reading to provide valid and reliable assessments and scientifically-based predictions of future reading abilities.

  • “myON reader”charts and forecasts reading growth while measuring and reporting individual student reading activity over time.  
  • “myON reader”gives students access their growth trajectory report, understand how they can improve and take ownership of their growth.

3. Provides scaffolds and support so all students can read
Creating an environment for students to read is essential in helping students become confident readers.

  • “myON reader” provides word and sentence highlighting, high quality, fluent audio interpretations of each book, and comprehension quizzes are available within “myON reader” and access may be granted or denied to students by the teacher.  
  • “myON reader”  offers a dictionary embedded in every page provides definitions as well as audio pronunciation of the words.

4. Uses safe social learning tools to transform the school and classroom into a reading community
Safe social learning tools provide opportunities for teachers to encourage students to “tweet” about books and blog about what they read.  The tools within “myON reader” are safe and easy for teachers to control. 

  • “myON reader”allows students to write reviews and once the teacher approves each review is published for other students to see.  
  • “myON reader”provides an Amazon-like rating feature makes it possible for students to look at the book wall and see their recently read books as well as the most popular books and the top rated books in their reading community.  

5. Functions as a virtual extension to the library and a means to integrate technology into the classroom
Available on the Internet, myON reader extends access to books even when the school and library are closed.  With a collection that mirrors the fiction to non-fiction ratio of a typical library, 

  • “myON reader”provides a digital extension to any school library because students have access to all books,
  • “myON reader” makes it possible for families to have literacy experiences together and for siblings and parents and children to read and learn together.  
  • “myON reader”provides unlimited concurrent access to each book as well as the correlations to both state standards and the common core curriculum.
  • “myON reader” create opportunities for individual, whole group and small group instruction. Additionally, teachers may ask entire classes or grade levels to read the same book at the same time.
  • “myON reader”offers over 100 books in Spanish and functions as a strong support for some ESL students as well as a tremendous supplement to any high school Spanish course.
  • “myON reader“also enhances summer school programs and encourages attendance in before and after school programs because of the fun factor.
