More Than $6,500 in Unclaimed Property Funds Returned to Smoky Hill ESC

Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Rogers visited Smoky Hill Education Service Center in Salina in June to return more than $6,500 in unclaimed property to SHESC. The visit was part of the treasurer’s tour of the state, returning millions of dollars in unclaimed property to thousands of Kansans.

“The best part of my job is being able to deliver good news to families, and that news usually comes in the form of an unexpected check,” Rogers said. “We have an amazing team at the Treasurer’s Office working to get $400 million in unclaimed property back in the pockets of Kansans. We know these claims, ranging from a couple dollars to thousands, can assist families in putting food on the table, gas in the car, or any other expense.”

In addition to $6,577.81 returned to Smoky Hill Education Service Center, the treasurer’s office also located 40,945 unclaimed property claims worth $6,420,174 for Salina-area residents. Treasurer Rogers also hosted a pop-up event at Ad Astra Books and Coffee to talk with Salina residents and help them search their names in the unclaimed property dashboard, located at kansascash.ks.gov.

SHESC Executive Director Chris Moddelmog said he appreciated the efforts of Rogers and the Treasurer’s Office to help reunite Kansans with their unclaimed property.

“This has been a difficult year financially for many,” Moddelmog said. “Helping Kansans out by revealing to them where they have funds they may not have even known about is a valuable service. I want to thank the Treasurer’s Office for reaching out to SHESC and getting these thousands of dollars back to us. It will help support our purpose of serving educators and students across Kansas.”

Unclaimed property can be any financial asset that has not been claimed by its owner or has not had any owner-generated activity for a specific period of time. Unclaimed property is not real estate.

Claiming unclaimed property through the Office of Kansas State Treasurer is always easy, safe, and free. Any website requesting credit card information or offering to find property for a fee is not the official website of the State Treasurer.
